NHL Wednesday Night Odds

After an extremely busy Tuesday in the National Hockey League, things quiet down a bit on Wednesday with just three games on the ledger. That said, there’s still plenty to wager on – let’s take a look at Bovada’s online sportsbook for all the NHL lines from Wednesday night.

Bruins NHL

Washington +130 at Ottawa -160

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The Washington Capitals – who have won four consecutive Southeast Division banners – are a complete mess. They suffered one of their lowest moments of the season on Monday in a 5-0 loss to Carolina, the last-place team in the Eastern Conference. That game spotlighted all of the Capitals problems: Goaltending (Tomas Vokoun was awful, Michal Neuvirth wasn’t much better), porous defending and an inability to score timely goals. As such, Washington now sits 10th in the East and is fighting for second spot in the division with upstart Winnipeg – and both are looking up at first-place Florida.

Ottawa, meanwhile, has no similar problems. The Senators are coming off a 6-0 whipping of the Islanders on President’s Day to keep their stranglehold on second place in the Northeast Division – and they managed to stay within distance of first-place Boston in the process. The Sens are firing on all cylinders at the moment, led by Jason Spezza, the NHL’s sixth-leading scorer than also happens to be the NHL’s reigning third star of the week. The Sens have played well at Scotiabank Center this year and Washington has been awful on the road…that said, the Caps are desperate. So if you’re into desperation plays, you know what to do.

Boston +105 at St. Louis -135

Huge matchup at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis as the struggling Bruins enter an arena where the Blues have lost just three times in regulation this season. The Bruins  are dealing with a myriad of injuries at the moment, especially at forward, a big reason why they’re having trouble scoring goals of late. The most recent example was a 2-0 loss to lowly Minnesota on Sunday – the Bruins peppered netminder Niklas Backstrom with shots (48) but were unable to find the back of the net.

Now they’ve got the Blues, one of the tightest defensive teams in the NHL. St. Louis has the unique distinction of having two goalies with six shutouts this season – Brian Elliot and Jaroslav Halak – a pretty impressive feat when you consider the NHL leader, Henrik Lundqvist, has seven.  But like Boston, St. Louis is also struggling with injury right now – Jamie Langenbrunner, Jason Arnott, Matt D’Agostini and Alex Steen are all out of the lineup with various ailments. This game against Boston will be a big one in deciding if Blues GM Doug Armstrong needs to go out and make deals prior to the trade deadline, or if the Blues have the depth necessary to survive all these injuries. So there’s something to keep in mind when laying wagers on Wednesday night.
