The main event pits two Welterweights that are currently on the outside of the title picture who could, with a solid performance could sneak into the title conversation. Diego Sanchez will be looking to build on an impressive outing in his last fight while Martin Kampmann will be looking to avenge a controversial decision loss to #1 contender Jake Shields.
UFC on Versus 3 – Sanchez vs. Kampmann
Date: Thursday, March 3, 2011
Venue: The KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky
Broadcast: Live FREE on Versus at 9:00 p.m. E.T.
Diego Sanchez (22-4): +130
Martin Kampmann (17-4): -160
Diego Sanchez’s looked to be on a path to an MMA Betting title before running into BJ Penn and John Hathaway. Those fights were at Lightweight. Since that time, Sanchez has moved back up to Welterweight and if his impressive win over dangerous striker Paulo Thiago is any indication, Welterweight is where Sanchez will stay!
Sanchez is known as one of the most aggressive fighters in the UFC. Sometimes his style works and other times it doesn’t. He is primarily a wrestler who brings a relentless pace and a bulldogging style to the Octagon. Greg Jackson has worked on harnessing the Sanchez energy and hopes are that he can duplicate what was a very impressive outing against Thiago.
Sanchez is not known as a great technical striker, but he is not uncomfortable on his feet. He is a good puncher and a decent kicker but his aggressiveness has left him open in the past to unnecessary punishment. Kampmann is a good striker so Sanchez would be advised to get this fight to the mat, use his Brown Belt in jiu-jitsu and try to outlast Kampmann with his outrageous cardio.
Martin Kampmann was a huge UFC Betting underdog against Jake Shields but most felt that he did enough to win the fight. He is a well rounded fighter who can wrestle, submit, grapple and box along with the best in the business. Proof of his well rounded game is his six submission victories and his seven KO victories. Takedown defense will be key in this matchup – something that he has a good grasp on.
Martin Kampmann will certainly have the edge in the standup in this fight. His punches are powerful and accurate as demonstrated in his win over the very dangerous Paulo Thiago. He uses his Thai boxing very effectively and is dangerous with his hands and his feet. Although Kampmann can hold his own on the ground, chances are that he will try to keep this fight standing and keep it out of Sanchez’s danger zone.
UFC Betting Outlook:
Kampmann will have the edge on the feet and he may equal Sanchez in the wrestling department. Where Kampmann will have the decided edge is in sheer size and strength. Kampmann is a natural Middleweight and Sanchez looks more like a Lightweight than a Welterweight. Kampmann should be able to overpower Sanchez in the clinch and dictate where this fight is to play out. A decision is likely in this contest and the winner will be the bigger and stronger fighter.
UFC Betting Pick: Martin Kampmann -160
